Happy Holidays!!

Graham has just finished up his first holiday season! At the beginning of December, we celebrated Hanukkah. We also had a few postponed Hanukkah celebrations throughout the month in order to wait for our close friends to come into town. Unfortunately, I have been neglecting my camera and did not take any pictures of our little man at these celebrations. Graham had a wonderful time and received some very cool gifts (clothes, toys for the car, and stuffed animals). Luckily my mom and dad are much better at remembering their camera and documented Graham's first Christmas Eve and Christmas.

Meeting Uncle Kyle for the first time.

Playing with Papa on Christmas Eve before our tradition of making homemade pizzas.

I'm such a handsome man! Look at my cute Christmas onesie!

The family opening presents. Graham napped through pretty much the entire afternoon and missed the present opening.

Slumber Parties & Smiles

Graham had quite the busy week! He had overnight stays with both sets of grandparents! On Thursday night, he stayed up in Evergreen with Grandma and Grandpa Dozeman while Michael and I got some work done (him for school and me for a class I have to take for work) and got some sleep. On Saturday night, he stayed with Cookie and Grandpa Pretekin while Michael and I went to the holiday party for his work and stayed overnight downtown. Graham had a great time both nights! On Thursday, my mom told me that she was pretty sure he was smiling on his own and it wasn't just gas anymore. On Friday, he smiled at me for the first time! Grandpa Pretekin captured his smile when he was there Saturday night.

Cookie's friends got her a Pack'n'Play and a swing to have at their house for Graham for her birthday at the end of November. And while he doesn't seem to go for the swing at our house, he loved it at theirs. I'm not sure why this is true, since we have the exact same swing, just with different stuff on it (ours is a lamb and the colors aren't as bright..maybe that's it).

G at the Gym

Lately we have noticed that Graham has become very alert and is constantly looking around at everything when he is awake. He loves the mobile in his crib and on his swing. I thought that he might enjoy one of those baby activity gyms - you know, the ones where they lay on a mat that has bars across it with toys attached. I thought he would really enjoy looking at all of toys, and was I ever right!
Here's a video of him enjoying his new gym. Feel free to ignore me talking in the background. Also ignore the spit-up he's sporting in his close-up at the end of the video. He had recently ate and is kind of a spitter.

One Month Old (almost)!

Graham is coming up on being one month old! While he is 4 weeks today, he will officially be one month on Sat. Dec. 4th!

Earlier this week we went for Graham's weight check, and I am happy to report that he now weighs 8 lbs. 11 oz. He is finally gaining weight! His pediatrician was very pleased, and he no longer needs to go back for regular weight checks. Keep up the good growing little guy!

Our family has been hit with colds this week. First Michael caught a terrible cold and cough. Then Graham got the bug. It's so sad to watch a little guy struggle with his breathing because he is congested and not be able to do a whole lot about it. We have found that he enjoys sleeping in his bouncy chair right now. It helps keep him upright and therefore, breathe better.

Graham's not the only one that likes to sleep in the bouncy chair...

Michael is on the mend now, and Graham seems to not be far behind. While I am not feeling 100%, I am no where near as sick as my boys were. Hopefully it will stay that way! Let's hope that December is a healthy month for the Pretekin's!

1st Photos

When Graham was born, he had his first photos taken at the hospital. Our CD with the images finally arrived!

We used three different poses from that shoot for the announcements:

Baby's Day Out

We started out the day by sleeping in, since we didn't sleep much during the night last night. Graham likes to sleep with his legs curled up. Some of his onesies are a little big on him, so he can really get his legs tucked up there. Maybe I should get him some of those sleep sacks since he's not really using the legs in pj's anyway.

We finished out the morning in our Pack'n'Play while I got things together for our outing. Graham and Linus are fast becoming best buds (don't worry, I was close by supervising their interaction the entire time).

This afternoon we made an outing to go visit school. Everyone was very excited to see Graham, and he had a great time being loved on by everyone! Once we got home, I thought we might get a little nap in, but Graham was still pretty excited from his day, so we just hung out together.

Life and Times of Graham

Birth Story: On a Wednesday afternoon a little before 2:00, I was teaching my 6th grade math class about factors. All of the sudden I felt a small gush. Not certain that my water had just broken, I sat down for a second and thought about what to do. I sent one of my students (not a good choice of student..I sent one of my wanderers) next door to get my teaching partner to watch my class so I could investigate the gushing. At this point the kids had no idea what was going on, as I wasn't standing in any sort of puddle or anything dramatic like that. Finally the student I sent out returned, without my teaching partner. Turns out he didn't really convey the urgency of the situation to her and she didn't think it necessary to come right at that moment. Finally I decided to run across the hall to bathroom since my students were all diligently working. On my way there, there were several more small gushes (still no puddle or anything obvious to anyone else). I realized at that point that my water really had broken. I let my teaching partner know, so that my class could be taken care of and went to call Michael. He came to get me, and we headed to the hospital. Since my water had broken they admitted me, although I wasn't having any sort of regular contractions. Around 7:00pm the doctor started me on Pitocin to jump start my labor since I still wasn't having any sort of regular contractions. Jump start it did and about midnight I was enjoying my epidural and dialated 5cm. They told me once I hit 5, I would dilate approximately 1cm every hour, so they figured around 5:00am I would be ready to push. At 1:30am when the nurse checked me, I was 10cm and ready to start pushing. The doctor came to check me out and informed us that I had a curved tailbone due to having broken it at some point in my life (I have no idea when this happened) and would have to push extra hard in order to get the baby over the tailbone. He also said that most likely I would not be able to push him over by myself, and he would need to use forceps, which of course has some added risks. After a lot of hard pushing and the help of forceps, Graham Taylor Pretekin entered the world on Thursday November 4th at 4:08am.

Week 1: We came home Friday. Graham and I had had issues in the hospital with nursing, despite manny consultations with the lactation specialists and continued to have these issues once we came home, so it made for a rough couple of days. I also was not feeling very well - a touch of the flu, not to mention being incredibly sore (sadly the epidural could only block out a certain amount of the pain once the forceps became involved), which added to the stress. Finally, after a lot of tears and meltdowns, I realized that nursing was just not for us. I HATED it and Graham wasn't doing well either. He had lost a lot of weight and was struggling to latch on and get the nutrition he needed. We just couldn't get the hang of it, so with everyone's support I made the decision to quit nursing him and start him on formula. At first Graham took to the formula like a champ and started gaining his weight back. However after a few days it became clear that he was having some serious tummy issues. After some phone calls to the pediatrician, it was determined that he most likely had a milk protein allergy and needed to be moved to a soy formula. He would need to be given reduced calories (more water, less formula) for a day or so in order to help his stomach clear out. There was also a chance that he could be allergic to the soy as well, but we would just have to wait and see. Graham did great with the soy and there was no sign of an allergy. Despite being a super spitter, he continues to do well with the soy formula. Graham has been an excellent sleeper. He typically will go 3-4 hours between feedings, but has days where he will do 5-6 hour stretches (these tend to be at night!!) Despite our rough first week home, Graham is a wonderful baby, who fusses very little and loves to be cuddled and held by anyone and everyone.

Week 2: Graham went to his two week checkup and due to all of the tummy troubles and the the reduced calorie feedings, he was only an ounce over his birth weight. That meant that he was gaining the very minimum amount of weight he should be (babies are supposed to gain between .5oz and 1.5oz per day). He will need to go back in a week and half for a weight check to make sure he hasn't fallen below the .5oz he's been gaining per day. I'm hoping that since the tummy issues seem to be figured out, he'll be gaining a little more. Other than his weight, Graham looked great at his two week check and is definitely thriving. Week 2 has been much more relaxed for both myself and Graham. We are getting into more of a routine and have made it past some of the yucky health stuff we both encountered last week. We're looking forward to week 3, where we will celebrate Thanksgiving, Grandma Linny's birthday, and Michael's family from California will get to meet our little guy!

How is the rest of the Pretekin Pride?
Any fears we had about how our four cats would do around the baby are now completely gone. All of the cats are very gentle around him and will lie down by him, but do not try to climb on him in any way. Linus is very much in love with baby Graham and will bring out his sad meow when the baby cries or when he is distressed about how Graham is doing. I was worried that a high pitched and loud baby cry would send all the cats over the edge, but they don't seem to mind and continue about their business when Graham does cry. Way to go fur babies!!

The Waiting Game

The anticipation is killing me!! I really feel like my whole pregnancy has flown by. Until now. These past two weeks have gone soooo slowly. I feel like the time between now and when Baby P is born will also move in slow motion. Someone told me that once you hit that 9th month, it goes so fast from there. Lies. All lies. So here I am, someone who is not good with surprises and not all that patient, just waiting. I'm actually sort of glad that I'm still working because it keeps my mind on something else during the day. However, this past week we had a four day weekend for Fall Break. Here's some of things I could have done with my time off:

  • finshing the nursery

  • washing, folding, and putting awat all of the clothes, blankets, and other linens washed,

  • writing thank yous

  • addressing the baby announcements

  • cleaning/picking up the house

  • the house has been cleaned

  • getting the laundry washed, folderd, ironed, and put away

Too bad ALL of these things have been done. Some of them for quite a while now. So, what's a girl to do with her extra time? Well, I decided that we would need dinner for after the baby was born. So I spent a bunch of time planning, shopping, and cooking freezable meals. I currently have four meals done, plus two boxed lasagnas and plans to add another creation of mine or two to the mix.

Our freezer isn't very big and is slowly running out of room with all of these casserole dishes stacking up. Hopefully Baby P will make his debut soon, or I will have to find a new project to take up my time (someone told me to just take the time to relax, but this is just not going to happen. Everytime I sit down to relax, the anticipation and anxiety start to drive me crazy. Better for me to stay busy at this point!)

38 Weeks!

Here I am at 38 weeks! Two weeks until the little guy's due date! I'm not sure there's much change from last week, other than the fact that you can more clearly see the stretch marks peaking over the side of my jeans. I have to say, though, what you see is all I have gotten, so I feel pretty happy about that.
My doctor's appointment today went well and everything looked good. I am dialated 1 cm (that's 1/2 cm more than last week) and 50% effaced (hasn't changed since last week). Nothing big, but we're definitely on our way. My doctor guessed that right now, Baby P is probably close to 7lbs. I had been a little concerned because I felt like Baby P wasn't moving as much these last couple of days. The doctor did an ultrasound and a non-stress test to check it out. Everything looked great and he told me that Baby P might just have moved into a position that was making it slightly more difficult for me to feel him. We'll see where we are at next week at our doctor's appointment or maybe we'll have a baby before then!

I also came home today to find this:
At least someone is enjoying the deluxe baby posturepedic for now, right?

37 Weeks

Here I am at 37 weeks - full term! Since our baby will come whenever he is ready, I decided to start doing weekly pictures from here on out. Of course people have been asking how I'm feeling...at this point nothing seems to be going on. I'm not noticing anything that would signal to me that he will be here very soon, but it's my first time around, so what do I know!

Tomorrow I will have the first of my weekly doctor appointments from here on out, so I will keep everyone updated on what (if anything) is happening!
Today I was also given a wonderful baby shower by my co-workers. I had a great time and our baby is certainly very loved. We appreciate everyone's generosity so much and want to thank everyone for investing in our growing family!

36 weeks!

Today we hit the 36 week mark - Baby P is beginning his 9th month! After we complete this week and move into our 37th week, Baby P will officially be considered full-term.

Last week we had a doctor's appointment and got the chance to see an ultrasound of our baby boy again. It was unexpected surprise to walk into the appointment and have the doctor announce that he would be performing the ultrasound to see what position the baby was in. Baby P is head down and ready to go whenever he decides it's time! Starting next week (week 37) we will be making weekly visits to the doctor's office where he will begin checking for dilation, effacement, and station. The office had me make all the rest of my appointments up through week 41 (let's hope not). At this point we just wait for our little guy to arrive...hopefully the anticipation won't drive me too crazy!
